If you just want to watch Ellen's movies on TV, rent the DVDs or are content with clips off the internet, that's great. You can turn back now.
Those who wonder wether or not they should actually buy some of her DVDs, stay and read on.

This list is obviously highly subjective and open to amendments, questions and criticism.

Juno - YES
No-brainer.

Smart People - YES
Though not really all that funny, unless you enjoy laughing at other people's misery...

The Stone Angel - NO
Her role is too small (four scenes) and ends stupidly tragic.

An American Crime - YES
Though I watched it only once and don't intend to repeat that experience anytime soon...

The Tracey Fragments - YES
She's insanely brilliant and in every scene. The Re-Fragmented clips are incomplete, so you need the DVD to see all the footage.

X-Men: The Last Stand - NO
Small role, bad movie.

Hard Candy - YES
No-brainer.

ReGenesis Season 1 - YES
She's only in the first eight episodes but I enjoyed those very much.

Mouth to Mouth - YES
Brilliant leading role. Not really enjoyable movie though...

Wilby Wonderful - YES
Great ensemble movie.

Ghost Cat - YES
Leading role, nice movie for children.

Going for Broke - NO
Important supporting role with meaty scenes, but everything else is really bad.

Homeless to Harvard: The Liz Murray Story - NO
She's in ONE scene!

The Wet Season - NO
15 Canadian Dollars via mailed cheque, only for incorrigible completionists.

Love That Boy - NO
Small role, good movie but woefully hard to find nowadays.

Marion Bridge - YES
Small but pivotal role, great movie.

Touch & Go - NO
She's in just four scenes.

I downloaded a Ghost - YES
BAD movie, but her first leading role...

Trailer Park Boys Season 1+2 - YES
Small role, but this stuff is really funny.

Pit Pony (TV-Series) - NO
Small role, unfinished series, ends with cliffhanger.

Pit Pony (TV-Movie) - NO
Small role, too young to even be instantly recognized.

I would say no to Smart People. I don't think it's worth it. I saw it on demand once and that was enough for me. Ellen was beautiful in it, but it wasn't all that funny for a comedy.

I say yes to all of Ellen's movies. If she's in it, then I try to own it.

I don't like all of her movies, I hated Stone Angel but the collector in me has to get everything.

I think he's making a list of the movies worth buying, just for Ellen screen time. You may not have liked Smart People, but she's one of the leading characters.

I'd disagree about Going for Broke. I'll agree it's an afterschool special, but she had a big part in that movie. And I'd recommend getting the trailer park boys dvds, but not only for Ellen.

Of course, I disagree with Pit Pony :D (insert comment here, Milo)....Ellen's role is small in the film, and she is only in part of the TV series...but worth the buy. She is definitely recognizable in the TV series. And, a very educational series

 I'm not saying anything. You know I like those historical types of shows too. I recently found a channel that is showing Road to Avonlea, so I've been catching that from time to time. :)

And she was quite good in her part. I liked the movie.

I also thought the Pit Pony movie was good and it can be found for about $5 new, which makes it a no-brainer.

I have to disagree, too. Based on a true incident, this story was very believable in many regards and will never be out of date. Her chraracter was really important as the compulsive gambling of her mother transformed her from a lovely teenager into a rebellious punk girl, which in turn was a good way to show the side effects of her mother's addiction. Besides, she looked quite hot in her outfit (in the second part of the movie) and her performance was as awesome as always.

*Thumbs up* :thumbup::thumbup:

Yeah, some entries are debatable, but I absolutely wanted to avoid MAYBEs...

For completeness' sake I now included predictions for the DVDs I still need.

Canadian historical dramas are very good....they tend not to be cheesy like US ones get, sometimes. And, I think I was on or near the Road to Avonlea earlier this summer :D Green Gables, I was there :D As well as crawling around an undersea coal mine in Glace Bay :D

Of course both Road to Avonlea and Anne of Green Gables were filmed in a couple different areas just north of Toronto.

Mouth to Mouth - YES

Wilby Wonderful - YES
Great ensemble movie.

Ghost Cat - (YES)
Leading role (?), could be seen as a sounding of her marketability.

Marion Bridge - YES
Small but pivotal role, great movie.

I downloaded a Ghost - YES
BAD movie, but her first leading role...

Trailer Park Boys Season 1+2 - YES
Small role, but this stuff is really funny.
Are most of these available on Amazon.com or are there other places to purchase them?
All of those are currently available from Amazon except Ghost Cat which is going to be released on DVD towards the end of September. Buy 'em used, you'll save money.

@bobydean

Wow, the third paragraph is just one sentence!

And I thought, only I had problems communicating what's going on in my head...

I don't actually think I can give advice on where to get the best deal on the DVDs, sorry. I bought mine on various amazon- and eBay-incarnations around the globe. I made the experience that the prices can vary greatly from one week to the next. So my information would be outdated by now.

Concerning "An American Crime":
I don't normally shy away from violence in movies. It just has to be 'enjoyable'. Movies are supposed to be entertainment after all. But this only sickened me. Ellen is just too heartbreakingly 'real'. I guess all actors I respect and felt sympathy for would have made me feel similarly. But without Ellen I would never even have heard of this movie in the first place. Just not my cup of tea...

I don't think I'm courageous because I invite criticism. By choosing a polarizing rating system, I was sure to hear many other opinions. I'm happy someone stood up for "Going Broke" or "Pit Pony", for example...

This way newbies should be able to make up their own minds.

Where were we?

Ah, yes.

Smart People...
As I already implied, I agree the movie is a disappointment. But apart from Ellen's decent amount of screentime, what secured my vote for it was the fact that it's one of the few DVDs on the list with adequate Extras (US-Version; visit the Fan Corner to find other versions and links to online shops).
