Yay! Oddly, the only Cisco commercial with Ellen I've seen on TV is when she visits the doctor, it's nice to see she'll have a little more exposure with this documentary.

Thanks for the heads up, Dom.

On another note, watching the trailer, this is a pretty troubling revelation at the impact that bees have on the global scale; I had no idea that their pollination accounted for so many other food sources.

Met Kimya Dawson Last Nite (Orlando Concert)

Last nite Kimya Dawson was in Orlando for a concert last nite....got to meet her this time....two years ago when she was in town it was really crowded and she was not feeling well.

She is real sweet..tlked to her for a few minutes. I did ask her if she ever got credit or thank yous from Jason Reitman after Juno Soundtrack won the Grammy.

According to Kimya....Jason sent her a real nice thank you letter....and also had the Grammy Award people send her a certificate and a letter recognizing her contributions to the soundtrack. She said Jason is a real nice guy and she was so happy when she received all the nice letters and recognitions for the Juno ST.

And, her show this time was much better than her Orlando appearance two years ago. The last time she was in Orlando she was ill....and (my opinion) probably overwhelmed with all the attention from Juno. At this show she did not have her family with her (Panda, her daughter, decided to stay back at the Nickolodeon Hotel....yes the Nick kids channel, hotel.....and her husband Angelo Spencer was scheduled to do a seperate show at another Orlando club later this week)

Although it was an early time for a concert (5PM)....it allowed everyone there (150-200 people) a chance to meet and talk to Kimya.

She played a lot of her new songs (which were quite good....in the Kimya style)...and unlike most artists, you don't get the boring filler from Kimya. She did play Tire Swing and Loose Lips from the Juno ST (Loose Lips, of course, I sang along....but of course )

Want to buy: Ghost Cat on Blu Ray

Hello all-

I've found out some new information about obtaining this movie on blu-ray disc at a much lower price than the $48.99 being charged by CD Universe for a film that's hardly ever in stock - I just canceled my order there, so that single copy is probably back up for grabs. They didn't even notify me; I had to check myself excellent business being run, in my opinion.

Anyway, please read the information above to view my initial comments about this movie; I am seeking the film in a blu-ray format rather than the standard DVD version that seems to be the only one available.

After a second email to North American Motion Pictures, and a wait of about two weeks, I received a reply from the director of operations for the company. Our conversation is posted above.

If I am reading that correctly, she is only charging $20 apiece per title ordered; nowhere does she mention having to purchase three DVDs of a movie just to gain a blu-ray copy of the film. Ellen's film is not listed anywhere in the storefront itself, so maybe quantities are limited, but the fact that it took such a long time (in my opinion, at least) to garner a response, and the fact that she includes a cellular/mobile telephone number leads me to believe that perhaps the company is still a small and/or obscure one.

I plan to mail her a check out this afternoon for the above title, as well as one or two others, simply as a show of interest and faith in the company; the films all seem to be low-budget or indie, but that doesn't necessarily make them terrible, as Ellen's early work shows us .

Just thought I'd pass along the news, and make folks aware that they can potentially save thirty or so American dollars on what has otherwise appeared to be a hard-to-find film anywhere else.

Ordering directly from a company, you're not forced to pay a merchant's mark-up retail prices.

Hi people. English is my fourth language, so I cannot express all the subtilities of my feelings. I am glad to be on this site because it allows me to communicate with Canadians and US people, my two favourite countries. On this site I will represent the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg, a small country between France and Germany. "Juno" is sold in our DVD shops but I think I am the only Luxembourger on this site. "Juno" is actually one of my top ten favourite movies because I feel like Juno herself. Actually I am male, 37, single and publisher. In my heart I am Juno. Have a nice evening !

I have noticed lately that in order for someone to classify a movie as good, one or both of the following must be happening:

1) The movie, from the artistic point of view (meaning the directing, the acting, the scenery etc), must be really good.
2) One must identify, at some level, with the main character.

(The above sounds like a mathematical theorem Well, it’s way more complicated than that, but I hope everyone knows what I mean…)

In my opinion the movie lacked (1) (only as far as the directing and scenery is concerned). For example, I would have liked more action in the roller derby scenes. Not that they were totally flat, on the contrary. Maybe the music wasn’t “lifting” enough, I don’t know…

On the other hand, the movie had many good elements. First of all, the way the rules of the roller derby were presented was very clear and easily understood by people like me that had never even heard of it before. Additionally, we had the chance to see the “insides” of this sport (meaning how the girls felt, what they were thinking etc). Last but not least, the Mother-daughter relationship was one that I had never seen in any other movie. To me, that was the most interesting part of the movie, to see how Bliss could balance between what she liked and what her mother wanted for her. All the actors and actresses did a great job and Ellen Page incarnated Bliss in a very realistic and honest way.

My rating was 7/10.

Just an fyi that I found a fairly detailed biography about Ellen here:

As far as I know, no one has posted this here before. If someone has, then sorry for the repeat.

Anyhow, it's a fairly long biographical write-up; it's nine pages long! And the site even includes relatively recent pics of Ellen and her friends/co-stars, too. There's pics of Ellen at September 2009's TIFF Whip It debut. And there's pics of Ellen and Leo Dicaprio on the set of Inception. Ellen is even wearing what appears to be a red hoody on the set with Leo. I wonder if Chris Nolan is doing what Jason Reitman did, and the red hoody is a sly reference/homage to Hard Candy? BTW, if you don't know what I'm referring to, Jason Reitman had Ellen wear a red hoody in a scene in Juno. The red hoody is a reference to one of Ellen's previous movies, Hard Candy, in which she played Hayley Stark. At one point in Hard Candy, Ellen as Hayley, is wearing a red hoody.

As for the bio write-up, as ever with these types of things, it's uncertain how much of it is accurate. However, there aren't any negative comments about Ellen and/or her family or friends. Indeed, it's quite complimentary.

BTW, Dom, when I saw the writer of the EP bio, I actually thought it was you who was the author. I got my Doms confused!

Lori, I hope you have it by now - my copy shipped directly from Oz - thank you, Amazon UK. I'm told it's actually tri-regional (ABC,) but a commentor on Amazon US stated it won't play on US PS3s as of late last year. Good thing I broke down and bought that region-free Panasonic after all, let's just hope it works.

I missed the FedEx man the other day, but it should be there when I get back from my hospital operation today - one of two, but at least it's something to cheer me up, and I have "An American Crime" to tide me over until "Hard Candy" arrives. If anyone's interested in procuring a player, I bought one Panasonic DMP-BD60K for $300 shipped in the States.

Kind of pricey, but if it plays DVD regions 0 - 8 (7 and 8 are apparently airline and governmental issue only may as well do it all) as well as all Blu regions, it's a blessing. And with the newer HDTVs, I shouldn't have to worry about the PAL conversion dilemma I had a few years ago with "David the Gnome" curse you and your 30 frames per second!

I'll let you know how "American Crime" (curiously, the Swedish title drops the 'An') plays out; it's funny in a way, since the front and spine are in English entirely, but the back of the cover is entirely in Swedish. I hope the disc menus are explanatory...hadn't thought of that.

Anyway, this company ("International Electronics;" the business titles are Region Code Free DVD or 220-Electronics ) is US-based in Illinois, responded to my emails within hours it seemed, and shipped the player with a confirmation FedEx slip (Adobe Acrobat download file) within two days.

220-electronics looks like a nicer, cleaner site, format-wise, but it's the same company regardless, and they even have a toll-free number and directions to their warehouse. Seems pretty open and honest to me, with directions to the address, and I'd wager the phone service may be just as good based on that. I ordered from the first site, personally.

Ignore the "huge sale" banner that says it's ending 'soon;' it's been posted for awhile, and I got the sale price, if there really was one, plus a free HDMI cable and a screen cleaning cloth - nothing fancy, but nice to have.

If you're international, they'll ship most players for $25 USD to Canada or $95 USD elsewhere; it goes by size and weight. I've read the Kogan and the Soniq brands in Australia can simply be region-hacked with a few button presses of the remote, but that may not always apply, I wouldn't know. Also don't know if that's for DVDs as well as BRs or DVDs only, if at all.

I'll keep you posted if the multi-region playable discs are usable in the Panasonic. I hope so, since this film hasn't seen a US release yet in BR and may not ever, being ABC already. I paid about $23 shipped for it - seemed fair enough. However, if you're going to make a BR worldwide-operable, please make sure it's truly exactly that but maybe Sony is the guilty party with the PS3.

Odd how all the 'Australian imports' of the BR - the only BR of the film I've seen for sale, mind you, seem to ship from the US or the UK to begin with - never Australia itself . I had a hard time finding one cheaply on Amazon US, but the UK had a decently cheaper price, even after the money conversion - and it even came from Oz .

Feel free to move this post elsewhere if needed, but I will note "Hard Candy" and its usage on the Panasonic once I get both items, so I figured this was appropriate enough to start here.

I received the player today (2/14/09, I hooked it up 2/16/09) in perfect condition, well-boxed in a cardboard box containing the Panasonic unit in original box, with a remote control, batteries, AV cables, an HDMI cable, manual for the player, and a very simple one-sheet guide to setting up the player to play in different regions.

You turn it off with the remote, to put it in 'standby mode' and press 1 for region A, 2 for region B, or 3 for C. Turn it back on, and it's regionally-formatted accordingly.

I set it to read region C, the obscurest one of all, and inserted my copy of "Whip It," which is region A only. I was informed that the disc could not be played on my "region C player."

I then turned it off, removed the disc, and tried playing it once more; it still read the disc as region A, and the player as region C. This leads me to believe that the region-lock may be retained after disc removal. Excellent!

Lastly, I turned it off, pressed 1 on the remote for region A, and the disc booted normally. The player comes defaulted to region A, so no harm was done.

This appears to be an excellent player and is thus far working flawlessly. The company offers a 1-year guarantee, which is nice.

I'm not sure if you'd care to move this thread, but feel free to - perhaps it could even be made a header thread for the site? If so, I'm more than happy to edit it for length and provide what photos I can. People may want to grab this beauty.

My other two EP blu rays, "An American Crime" and "Hard Candy" are region-free, so are as of yet untested.

I keep hearing how the later seasons went downhill (I'm assuming there's only four?) but I'm still obsessive about complete series, and just sunk another $30 into season one DVDs via Canada...odd how we don't carry the show, not even on eBay in region one.

I'd like a full set, Ellen or no.
